The neuroanatomical structures of the human auditory system are surprisingly mature at birth. Infants can discriminate different voices very soon after being born. A newborn baby can recognize it's mother's voice and is sensitive to intonation contours. The sensitive period for language learning is at it's peak between birth and the age of six (M. Montessori).
