The School

History

Toy Box began in 1994 when an English mother, inspired by the need to provide her own children with an English-speaking environment, pioneered Granada's first English nursery. Since then many children have benefited from the Toy Box experience and today Toy Box is the answer to many parents' quest for quality international pre-school education. Installations

The location

Just 10 minutes by car from Granada, Toy Box is located in a tranquil garden setting next door to the well known "Restaurante Cateto" in the municipality of Monachil (see map).

The Exterior

The building is set in 800 square metres of private grounds. Half of this space is devoted to lawn and adventure playground, as well as a plot for the children's vegetable and flower garden. There is a hard surface area for bikes and trikes and fantasy areas beneath the low-hanging branches of the trees. Children love these hideaways.

The Curriculum

Structured play at all levels is interwoven throughout the six areas of learning set out by the British educational system for early years, these areas are similar to those set by the LOGSE (Spanish equivalent). They include, 'knowledge and understanding of the world,' 'language and literature,' 'mathematics,' 'physical development,' 'personal, social and emotional development' and 'creative development.'

Ecology

Further to these areas, a seventh subject has been added. At Toy Box "ecology" is considered to be a subject in its own right and it can be linked to many of the daily activities. The survival of our planet is in the hands of our children, so ecological awareness is a top priority at Toy Box. Activities like gardening, recycling, waste awareness, wildlife observations and caring for our pets and animals are high on the agenda. A willingness on the part of staff to follow up children's leads means there is cross referencing where the main curriculum is concerned. This is both meaningful and enjoyable for everybody.

Evaluations

Toy Box uses a thorough continual evaluation system. A file is opened for every new child and regular reports are provided to parents as well as monthly tutorial meetings.

In the event of special needs children, Toy Box has the support of psychologists, who visit the centre when needed to assist in behaviour modification strategies, and other developmental areas. The centre is able to take children with physical disabilities, though a previous thorough consultation would be necessary on both parts, that of parents and school.

Teaching Staff

The women on the Toy Box team have a special profile:

  • They're qualified.
  • They're experienced.
  • They are either native English speakers or with a high level of spoken and written English.
  • They're in good health.
  • They love children and teaching.
  • They're serious and trustworthy.
  • They subscribe to the teaching philosophy of María Montessori.
  • They're ecologically aware.
  • Each one of them has a special talent, whether it's singing, dancing, artwork or playing a musical instrument.
  • They are, in a word, professionals.

In the important parents' meeting at the beginning of each school year we introduce the teaching team. After the meeting the parents have the opportunity to chat with them and get to know them personally.

All new personnel are interviewed by the management and spend training time working beside one of our established teachers before taking over a class themselves. The children are always in the hands of qualified, well-prepared teachers. The school tries every day to live up to its mission statement: To provide children with a fascinating world to be discovered by the children themselves through the English language. All of that in a loving and secure setting, inspected frequently by the children's parents, who have the maximum interest in the smooth and effective functioning of the Toy Box Little School of English.

Month of July (optional month)
Toy Box adopts a summer timetable and a summer approach in the month of July. Some of the regular attendants go away on holiday, thus leaving some July vacancies for non regulars. The hours are from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm and the programme of activities takes place mainly in the garden and includes aerobics and splash time. This is a good intensive starting point for a child wishing to join our "Chatterbox" conversation classes later and also serves as the adaptation period for children newly registered for September.

Chatterbox

Chatterbox is Toy Box's ongoing education program designed to help children from 5-12 years maintain their English-language skills in a structured play situation. The groups were originally designed to cater for Toy Box ex pupils, though other children are welcome, especially if they have a good level of spoken English.

One-and-a-half-hour afternoon extra-curricular group sessions are held on Tuesdays between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 5.00 pm to 6.30 pm. They combine speech with activities that are fun, thus appealing to children who would rather not be in yet another classroom atmosphere after school. Fun is taken seriously and the teachers monitor the progress of the pupils and design the activities in order to maximise language skills.

Miscellaneous

Parents

Toy Box is a parent-friendly place which is always striving for ways to involve parents in their children's experience. There is a standing invitation for parents to spend as much time as they wish with their children. We provide a written daily report for the very young children in the Teddy Room. Parents of older children can consult a daily written report on the notice board of all that their children have done throughout the day in the Jigsaw and Hobbyhorse rooms. Some of our parents have given talks or demonstrations related to their professions.

Workshops for Parents

Throughout the school year we organize talks, presentations and workshops for the parents of our pupils.

Outings

A picnic, anyone?

Both the staff and the children enjoy going out on excursions. Toy Box has taken its little pupils just about everywhere locally, including skiing in Sierra Nevada. They have been to the Alhambra, to farm schools, parks, fire stations and local monuments and museums. There is nothing like real life experiences for learning, so Toy Box programs at least one excursion approximately every six weeks. Some of the trips have even been partially subsidised by local organisations and authorities.

Transport

The children are transported in microbuses and full-sized buses belonging to authorized and regulated transport companies. All coaches have safety belts.

What Parents Have to Say about Toy Box

"Thank you for the work..."

Toy Box provides a warm, friendly, caring atmosphere designed to promote happy, confident fulfilled children with the knowledge that they will receive a sound and relevant English base for their education. Children are offered a variety of activities to develop their physical and intellectual skills, English language and literacy abilities and to promote social and emotional well being, by learning through play.

Our daughter Norah is very happy in Toy Box, she's loved and cared by all the staff and she's already singing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star at home and she's only 16 months!

Several schools in Granada sell English for young children but Toy Box is the only one employing native speakers and obtaining really good results.

Toy Box is the perfect combination of the Montessori Method with English Teaching in a “little” school. We think our daughter is receiving the attention she deserves because 2 teachers are in her classroom and because the school is not so big. We believe she doesn't need wide spaces to learn but she needs skilled teachers who take care of her and whom she can greatly learn from.

Thank you for the work all of you in Toy Box are doing for Norah.

Barbara Cordova & Ever Wanton

El mejor momento del día

"When they wake up, while Daniel is nursing, Alex snuggles up beside him. Daniel strokes Alex's head and the three of us stay that way for a few minutes, all together. One day I said to them that this was, without a doubt, the best moment of the day. Alex, without a moment's hesitation, replied: "Yes, this... and Toybox."
